DENVER -- Matt Kemp and Josh Beckett made sure the Los Angeles Dodgers had plenty to celebrate heading into their showdown with the Detroit Tigers. Kemp had four hits and drove in two runs, and Beckett tossed five scoreless innings and chipped in with a double as the Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 8-2 on Sunday. Adrian Gonzalez had three RBIs and Juan Uribe added three hits for the Dodgers, who won three of four in the weekend series. They head to AL Central-leading Detroit in first place in the NL West, a half-game ahead of San Francisco. "To win the first two and then lose yesterday, if you dont win today then youve had a negative series in my mind," manager Don Mattingly said. All-Star rosters were unveiled during the game, and the Dodgers were well-represented with four players. Right fielder Yasiel Puig was voted in as a starter, and second baseman Dee Gordon made it as a reserve. Starting pitchers Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke were also picked. "Im really excited I get to do it again, really excited for Puig and Dee, the first-time guys, and with Greinke," Kershaw said. "Ive never gotten to go with four of my own teammates before, so thats pretty cool." Beckett was left off the National League roster. Kershaw is a candidate to start the game, but said hes just happy to be going for the fourth time. "Id love to do it," Kershaw said. "Obviously, there are a ton of great candidates. Ill be fine either way. Definitely (would) be something cool to do." Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, an All-Star starter with an NL-best 5.3 million votes, scored both runs for the Rockies. Charlie Blackmon was named to the team as a reserve outfielder. "That has some extra meaning," Tulowitzki said. "A couple years Ive been chosen by the players and thats always an honour. This year the fans really stepped up and really supported me." Colorado was 26-20 on May 20 but has lost 17 of 20 to fall to within a half-game of last place in the NL West. The Rockies are 5-15 at Coors Field since June 3. Beckett (6-5) allowed three hits before leaving after aggravating his sore left hip while running the bases in the fifth. "It was the start and stop. I just kind of tweaked it," he said. Its been bothering me for a few weeks." Dodgers starters had gone 39 consecutive games with two or fewer walks allowed, but that streak ended when Beckett walked three. Hyun-Jin Ryu was the last Los Angeles starter to walk more than two when he had five on May 26. "I knew if it got to me it was going to end," Beckett said. "I dont have the stuff to pitch here and not peck around the strike zone." Beckett made up for ending the streak with a one-out double that started a five-run fifth. Gordon singled and Puig walked to load the bases. Gonzalez had a two-run single, Kemp followed with an RBI single and Scott Van Slyke walked. "Josh was good and gets us going with his bat," Mattingly said. "That double really gets us going." Uribe singled to third off reliever Brooks Brown, scoring Gonzalez on a play at the plate. Umpire Jeff Kellogg called Gonzalez out, but it was overturned after a review that took 1 minute, 28 seconds. Brown hit Miguel Rojas with a pitch to score Kemp and make it 5-0. "We swung the bats well, put up some runs for Beckett," Kemp said. "It was a good offensive series for us." Colorado left-hander Yohan Flande (0-2) allowed five runs in 4 1-3 innings. "He was throwing the ball well and then he ran into some trouble in the fifth," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "Until that point he had been pretty much cruising." The Rockies scored an unearned run in the sixth off reliever Chris Perez and another off Brian Wilson in the eighth. Kemps fourth hit of the day capped a three-run eighth that made it 8-1. That was minor, yet everybody involved in the postponed game between the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics on Friday night feared the worst if they had tried to play on a rain-soaked field. Even the umpiring crew deemed the conditions too dangerous. McClendon had his doubts the field could be ready for a 1:05 p.m. first pitch Saturday. "Thats probably the worst conditions Ive seen in all my years in baseball. Its not safe," McClendon said. "It was just a safety issue more than anything. They made the right decision." David Rinetti, As vice-president of stadium operations, said the tarp was kept off the field overnight in an effort to let it dry out after a week of heavy rains in the drought-starved Bay Area but an unexpected downpour caused further problems and the grounds crew worked tirelessly on the infield dirt from 7 a.m. until the game was called about the time of scheduled first pitch at 7:05 p.m. A delay had previously been announced. "Unfortunate misinterpretation of the forecast," Oakland general manager Billy Beane said. The As use a weather consultant to help make decisions during the wet weather and regarding use of the tarp. Rinetti said one-third of an inch of rain hit the area and the infield was under water when officials arrived Friday. The tarp went back on at about 4:35 p.m. when a steady rain began again. "Over the last week weve had probably more rain at the facility than weve had as long as Ive been here, which is many, many years," Rinetti said. "The field has taken a significant hit all week, and weve been working with a weather consultant get as much up to date information as possible. We had information last night that there was going to be a break in the storm. And because of that we wanted to use that opportunity to help dry out the field. Unfortunately we were wrong on the amount of rain, and we got about a third of an inch of rain last night." Players on both sides decided to pplay one game Saturday afternoon rather than a split doubleheader, which will be played later.dddddddddddd Felix Hernandez (1-0) will start as scheduled for Seattle against Dan Straily, who had been set to go Friday in his season debut. "Prepare to pitch tomorrow," Hernandez said. "That happens." Mariners athletic trainer Rick Griffin recalled a time in Chicago in the late 90s when Seattle played on a soggy field and lost one player to a groin injury and another to a pulled hamstring, prompting manager Lou Piniella to tell everyone, "Nobody run hard," Griffin said, quoting the former skipper. This marked Oaklands third weather-related game to be called off in seven days after the preseason Bay Bridge finale against the Giants was cancelled last Saturday. Tuesdays game was also postponed by rain and made up Wednesday as part of a day-night doubleheader. For the Mariners, it was another strange visit to the rundown Oakland Coliseum. Last June 16, a clogged pipe caused a sewage backup and flooding on the bottom floor of the ballpark that sent the Mariners and As scrambling around in towels. They headed for higher ground, to shower in the Oakland Raiders locker room. A hazmat crew inspected the affected areas for E-coli and a huge cleanup operation ensued — including the installation of new carpeting and the removal of some lockers in the visiting clubhouse to repair water-damaged walls with new sheet rock and wooden supports. In addition, new drywall was put in about a foot above the floor. New cabinets were needed in the visiting training room, and a new dining table and vanity in the nearby umpires room. Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik considers the incidents separate. He is more concerned with playing baseball. "Its a dated facility, what can you say?" Zduriencik said. "Its unusual. Very unusual. But they just didnt get the tarp down is what they said. They couldnt get the field ready. Well see what happens. They said theyll work on it all night and what that means, well have to see. But they have a lot of work to do to get it ready." ' ' '
